OSCE’s Initiative to Equip Uzbek Cadets with Cryptocurrency Crime Knowledge

In a groundbreaking initiative, the OSCE Transnational Threats Department, along with the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan, held an informative lecture for the cadets and lecturers of the Uzbekistan Ministry of Internal Affairs Academy. The session, held in Tashkent on November 23, was focused on crimes associated with cryptocurrencies. This educational event aimed to enlighten about 120 participants on the intricacies of cryptocurrency mechanisms, their role in facilitating criminal activities, and effective methods for investigating such crimes.

Understanding Cryptocurrencies in Law Enforcement and Crime Prevention

Martha Stickings, Deputy Head of the OSCE’s Strategic Police Matters Unit and Advisor on Cybercrime, emphasized the growing significance of cryptocurrencies in the cybercrime arena. She highlighted their increasing use by criminals for funding, concealing, and laundering proceeds from illegal activities. This lecture was a part of the OSCE’s commitment to assist its partners in Uzbekistan in enhancing their understanding of this crucial aspect, thereby integrating modern techniques into their law enforcement arsenal. The session featured insights from experts from the OSCE Transnational Threats Department, the Law Enforcement Academy of Uzbekistan, and the private sector.

OSCE’s Continued Efforts in Cybercrime Training in Central Asia

This in-person event marked the climax of a series of webinars initiated by the OSCE last autumn, aimed at addressing contemporary policing trends. These webinars, totaling seven, covered various topics, including cybercrime, cyber-enabled crime, and the exploration of the Dark Web’s criminal landscape. This series is a part of the OSCE’s broader strategy to enhance cybercrime fighting capabilities in Central Asia, under the “Capacity building on combating cybercrime in Central Asia” project. These initiatives underscore the OSCE’s commitment to strengthening regional law enforcement capabilities in the face of evolving digital threats.
