Sotheby’s Auction of ‘BitcoinShrooms’ Inscriptions on the Bitcoin Blockchain Draws $450,000
Sotheby’s first-ever sale of “inscriptions” created using the Bitcoin blockchain’s Ordinals protocol, known as “BitcoinShrooms,” exceeded expectations, with the auction drawing about $450,000, five times the highest estimates. The collection included three images, with a pixelated avocado selling for over $100,000 and a mushroom design inspired by Super Mario fetching more than $240,000. The success of the auction suggests a growing mainstream interest in tradable digital images known as NFTs on Bitcoin.
