A Round Rock man was sentenced in an Austin federal court to 24 months in prison for conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

According to court documents, from August 2019 to February 2021, Daniel Akira Mills, 22, committed a cyber intrusion technique known as “SIM swapping” to defraud victims of hundreds of thousands of dollars in property.

During a SIM swap attack, Mills gained control of a victim’s mobile phone number by linking that number to a subscriber identity module (SIM) card controlled by him. The victim’s calls and messages would then be routed to a device controlled by Mills which gave him access to the victims’ accounts.

Mills and his cohorts also posted messages on their victims’ social media accounts and posted private photos stolen from the accounts of celebrities.

Through this scheme, more than $600,000 in cryptocurrency was stolen from dozens of people nationwide.

In addition to the 2-year prison sentence, Mills must pay more than $530,000 in restitution to the victims.
